Started in 1999 by Nepenthes co-founder Daiki Suzuki, Engineered Garments is wholly dedicated to New York City.
After starting Nepenthes as a select boutique importing US-made products with Keizo Shimizu in the late 1980s, Daiki moved to New York and started designing, drawing inspiration from his love of American workwear and military uniforms. The attention to detail and references to menswear history mean the garments are "not designed, but engineered" – hence the name.
In 2025, Daiki's longtime collaborators and assistants Kenta Miura and Kunimasa Odagi assumed responsibility for designing the collections, all of which are still produced in New York City.
